The crash happened in the late afternoon during a bike ride with his son, a few hundred meters from his home in Michelbeke.

The prime minister fell on his head and momentarily lost consciousness. He was taken to UZ Gent for a series of tests, but they showed nothing alarming. De Croo is expected to return home on Saturday evening. Around 5 a.m. on Sunday morning, it was not yet clear whether the Prime Minister had actually left the hospital.

According to his cabinet, the accident will not affect his agenda for next week. He will use Sunday to rest.
