Deep red, fragrant – delicious! Strawberries taste like pure summer.

BILD explains everything to do with strawberries. Here you will find all the answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Why are strawberries so healthy?

Strawberries are an ideal slimming aid. They contain a lot of water and hardly any calories (approx. 32 kcal/100 g).

Also: folic acid and minerals such as potassium and magnesium strengthen the heart.

How many vitamins are in strawberries?

With 65 mg/100 g, they have more vitamin C than lemons and oranges. You can cover your daily vitamin C requirement with 120 g of strawberries.

How can I see if strawberries are from Germany?

You can find the country of origin on the label on the strawberry packaging.

The trade is obliged to provide an exact indication of origin. You should be suspicious when strawberries from Germany are already available at the beginning of April.

Depending on the weather, the first open-field strawberries from (southern) Germany will be available from early to mid-May.

What are the best strawberry varieties?

BILD names six popular ones out of a total of over 1000 Strawberry Varieties:

Elsanta
… is particularly popular because of the sweet, aromatic taste and the high vitamin C content. Elsante are light red fruits and very productive.

Pineberries
… is a variety from England (“frutilla chilena”) with white fruits. The taste is more reminiscent of pineapple, which is why it is called Pineberry (a hybrid of pineapple/ananas and strawberry/strawberry).

Collide with each other
… a very productive variety with small, firm, dark red fruits with a wonderful aroma.

kitty
… a Classic among strawberries. They have a particularly sweet, aromatic taste and are only suitable for growing in the garden.

We kiss each other
… is number one in German gardens. Very productive, sweet and aromatic. It is particularly suitable for the garden because it is robust and durable.

Thuriga
… are large, lush berries that are particularly firm and have an intense taste. They are very robust and are well suited for jam, cakes and juice.

Where can I get fresh strawberries?

It is best to pick them yourself and use them immediately!

The best time for collecting is a sunny morning during a prolonged dry spell. If you buy directly from the producer (for example at the market), the strawberries are usually picked the same morning.

How do I store strawberries?

If, for once, you cannot use fresh strawberries: leave the stalk on.

Spread the fruit out individually on paper towels so they don’t touch each other – preferably in their own compartment in the fridge.

Wash the fruit just before eating.

If there are moldy strawberries in a bowl: sort them out immediately and wash all the others thoroughly.

The best drinks with strawberries

Here are three delicious strawberry punch recipes.

★ Driver’s Bowl

Non-alcoholic strawberry punch with fresh lemon balm (1 stick) and elderberry syrup (100 ml)!

★ Children’s punch bowl

Colorful fruit punch: chopped kiwi, mango (1/2 fruit), strawberry (250 g), plus mint syrup (50 ml) and apple juice (1 liter): the punch is ready! Enjoy ice cold (116 calories).

Can strawberries transmit fox tapeworm?

Several recent studies have found that there is no discernible link between the consumption of outdoor and wild fruit and disease. Farmers who have had contact with contaminated soil, as well as dog and cat owners are usually affected.

If you want to be on the safe side, wash fruit (and hands!) thoroughly before eating.

Can I plant strawberries myself?

Yes. Young plants (available in nurseries and sometimes directly from the grower) are planted in autumn or early spring at a distance of around 20 cm – this can also be done in window boxes. A slightly sandy, well-drained soil with some compost is best.

Important: Keep the leaves dry when watering (danger of mold!). Straw helps: This way the leaves have no contact with the (wet) earth and no earth splashes on the fruit in heavy rain
