After studying brain tissue from 58 babies who died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and then comparing it to brain tissue from babies who died of other causes, they were able to determine their results.
The conclusions show that the babies who died from sudden death syndrome had an alteration in the serotonin 2A/C receptor, while the other cases of babies who died from other causes did not present this alteration.
What causes this alteration in brain tissue is that babies do not have a “survival instinct” if they lack oxygen.
Healthy babies have the ability to gasp for oxygen when they feel they are lacking, it is like a kind of resuscitation mechanism that they do on their own, however when there is this alteration in the serotonin 2A/C receptor, babies are unable to pull oxygen when it lacks, which causes sudden death.
