THE mayors have been having a hard time lately. The aedile of Magnières, in Meurthe et Moselle, received a slap then many blows when he had come to the village hall to ask calm to people gathered to celebrate a birthday.
Two men aged 18 and 25, suspected of having molested him, are being prosecuted, in particular for aggravated violence and death threats, the Nancy prosecutor announced on Monday. “A judicial investigation has been opened with an investigating judge, heads of aggravated violence, death threats and contempt of a person holding public authority,” said François Capin-Dulhoste in a press release.
“Around 2:30 a.m., an argument broke out causing nocturnal uproar. The mayor of the town, accompanied by two couples of friends, went there to calm the situation, ”says Mr. Capin-Dulhoste. “At the scene, an individual slapped the mayor, who left the village hall and was chased by a group of seven to eight individuals who knocked him to the ground and then beat him. »

The assault earned the mayor “total incapacity for one day”, according to the prosecutor. One of his friends who tried to intervene was also hit, which caused him a two-day ITT.
The prosecution will request judicial control measures against the two men, with in particular “prohibitions of contact between co-authors, with the victims”, and “prohibition of appearing in Magnières”, added Mr. Capin-Dulhoste.
Edouard Babel, who does not intend to leave office, received marks of support following the attack. “To attack a mayor is to attack the foundations of what unites us, the Republic. This violence requires a criminal response, “said the prefect of Meurthe-et-Moselle Arnaud Cochet in particular.
