  • The course was designed for personnel who care for minors with cancer in ONCOCREAN and in hospital Emergency areas, in order to provide timely and immediate management of this pathology.
  • Worldwide, 300,000 new cases of childhood cancer are detected each year.
  • Leukemia and lymphomas are the most common types of tumors in minors.

The primary characteristic that all health professionals should have is never to lose interest in learning new things. By increasing their knowledge they are better prepared and therefore patients also benefit. With this in mind, the authorities of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) announced an important course that they taught to their doctors.

According to the information, a total of 1,598 doctors who care for minors with cancer in the State Reference Center for the Care of Boys and Girls with Cancer (ONCOCREAN) and emergency areas in hospitals throughout the country, were trained in the timely and immediate management of the neutropenia. It is a complication associated with cancer that increases the risk of infections such as pneumonia.

Condition that endangers the health of minors

The Oncology Care Coordinator, Dr. Enrique López Aguilar, stressed that the neutropenia It is a condition characterized by a fever of 38°C or higher, and a lower than normal number of neutrophils (immune cells) in the blood.

“Currently neutropenia and fever are the leading cause of complications in girls and boys with cancer because it can lead to septic shock, for which the work must be joint, both medical and collaborative staff and family members. Social Security continues to conduct training in all its medical units.”

He explained that a pediatric cancer patient presents six to eight episodes of fever and neutropenia throughout their treatment. Infections in immunocompromised patients are considered within emergency situations, so it is essential to start with early and personalized treatment when neutropenia is detected.

Homologation in the treatment of children with cancer

He indicated that among the main actions that have been developed is the approval of treatment for patients diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, as well as the implementation of the Golden Hour program. It consists of providing antibiotics for the first 60 minutes to the patient with neutropenia in the first 60 minutes after admission to the hospital.

Dr. López Aguilar pointed out that another measure implemented in favor of minors with cancer is the Early Warning Assessment Scale (EVAT)a tool that allows early detection of signs of clinical deterioration in hospitalized patients, through physical examination and taking vital signs.

“Teamwork between health personnel and the patient is essential to achieve better results, which is why it is convenient for family members to be aware of the characteristics of neutropenia and to come to the unit in a timely manner with their daughter or son hospitable”.

On the other hand, the head of the Division of Digital and Information Services for the IMSS Digital Health Care, Isaac Mejía Montes de Oca, reported that in the last two weeks 148 beneficiaries were incorporated into the cancer treatment registration platform; This adds up to 12,938 patients, of which 40 percent are pediatric and 60 adults, who are treated in 66 hospitals, of which 15 are High Specialty Medical Units (UMAE) and 51 Second Level.
