Pope Francis appoints new auxiliary bishops of San Diego, United States

Pope Francis appointed this Tuesday two priests, a Mexican and a Vietnamese, as new auxiliary bishops of the Diocese of San Diego, in the state of California (USA).

The Auxiliary Bishops-elect are Fr. Michael Pham, an aeronautical engineer by profession and current vicar general and parish priest of Good Shepherd in San Diego; and the Mexican priest Fr. Felipe Pulido, vicar of the Diocese of Yakima and parish priest of Saint Josephin the town of Kennewick.

With these appointments, the Diocese of San Diego, whose bishop is Cardinal Robert McElroy, will have three auxiliary bishops. The other prelate is Bishop Ramón Bejarano.

P. Michael Pham

Fr. Pham was born on January 27, 1967 in Da Nang, in Vietnam. He is 56 years old. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering, he completed his ecclesiastical studies at the Saint Patrick Seminary a Menlo Park.

He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of San Diego on June 25, 1999.

He has held, among others, the following positions: parochial vicar of the parish Saint Mary Star of the Sea in Oceanside (1999-2001); vocation director (2001-2004); and parish priest Holy Family (2004-2014).

Since 2017 he has been episcopal vicar for ethnic communities and since 2018 he has been vicar general.

P. Philip Polished

For his part, Fr. Pulido was born on January 13, 1970 in Dos Aguas, in the state of Michoacán, in Mexico. He is 53 years old.

It was formed in the Mount Angel Seminary in Oregon between 1994 and 1998, and then in the Pontifical North American College in Rome. In 1998 she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Theology at the University of Santo Tomás de Aquino.

He was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Yakima on June 28, 2002.
