The European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers (ACEM) and the National Association of Companies in the Two Wheels Sector (Anesdor) share the concern of citizens, politicians and regulators about the acoustic impact on public health. Noise emissions from motorcycles have been regulated by the EU with defined maximum levels since the 1990s, which have been progressively reduced through the European type approval requirements.
As part of the solution to achieve compliance with these requirements, ACEM and Anesdor, in collaboration with the European replacement exhaust industry, including the Spanish YASUNI, have developed a technical guide on the correct application of anti-tampering guidelines for exhaust systems. . The purpose of this document is to clarify the appropriate guidelines on the anti-tampering regulations for exhaust mufflers. In particular for existing systems in the aftermarket, which can be installed throughout the life of the motorcycles.
This document strictly clarifies the technical requirements to guarantee the correct fixing on the cones of mufflers and dB-killer systems, thus avoiding their easy removal. After an informal validation within the European approval authorities, these guidelines have been officially endorsed within the framework of the United Nations, where the main regulations regarding emissions, sound and other vehicle systems originate.
The motorcycle industry is disseminating these guidelines, with the aim of raising awareness among all interested parties, including approval and market surveillance authorities, as well as the users themselves.
«Sometimes, motorcycles tend to be considered as vehicles with a high acoustic impact, but normally these are isolated cases of users of motorcycles with poor maintenance or who have carried out illegal manipulations on the exhaust system. The current sound limits required in the homologation do not imply a detrimental acoustic impact, and both the motorcycle manufacturing industry and the auxiliary replacement exhaust industry have made very important technological developments to achieve these high standards”, he explains.
