Artemisa wakes up proud with the news that one of her children is the 2023 National Environment Award. Countless reasons are worth to said lauro, but the work of its protagonist is impeccable; from Guanajay, researcher and tenured professor, honorary academic of the Cuban Academy of Sciences.

The Doctor in Biological Sciences René Pablo Capote López is, as defined a few days ago by Manuel Iturralde Vinent, National Environment Award winner (2015): “a person with sincere modesty, without double-talking, direct and feisty… deep knowledge of our country and their forests.”

In your opinion, what results support such a high award?
-Fundamentally my contributions to the knowledge of Cuban nature. I can mention, among others, the studies related to the characterization of Cuban ecosystems and landscapes, contributions to the establishment of biosphere reserves in the country as management units, the understanding of productive ecosystems on farms with a landscape approach, and that recently they have continued to be used to form a new conservation figure called biological corridors.

This award comes at a special time for you: just in time for the birth of the Artemis branch of the Academy of Sciences a few months ago. What are your purposes as a researcher, coordinator and organizer?

-The subsidiary has identified the need to get closer to young people, because they are a source of science, innovation and technology. They will allow the province to develop new ventures and perspectives.

We have the possibility of promoting the results of reference institutions and that in turn is our contribution to science in Cuba. I can mention the University of Artemisa, the CIGB Mariel, the UCTB Frutales, and the Grains and Tobacco research institutes, places where we reinvent ourselves daily and validate important analyzes.

Professor, what are you currently doing?

-Research and academia. In the case of the first, I work on the interaction of nature conservation units, remote resource areas and their relationship with productive units in different regions of the country. Likewise, the purpose of promoting experiences collected in the Connecting Landscapes project, looking at them from sustainability to be more efficient in the use of technologies.

My work as an expert is based on research related to climate change and Tarea Vida. I have had the opportunity to validate studies for the development of quality of life patterns in the country. And along with all this, my links as a teacher at the universities of Havana and Artemisa, as well as the National Botanical Garden, are also maintained.

To whom do you dedicate this award?

-To my country, which is unstoppable when we talk about science, and to those who have guaranteed my training to obtain such results.

A professor or researcher must be aware that their light reaches millions, and therefore, upon receiving this award, I consider it opportune to look towards a common perspective, always thinking of humanity.
