Inflation in Ecuador falls in May to 1.97% year-on-year

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) of Ecuador it has fallen almost five tenths in May, to stand at 1.97% year-on-year, and is below 2% for the first time since 2021, equaling the figure for December of that year.

Based on the figures released this Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC)Since the February data of this year, inflation in Ecuador has accumulated four months below 3% and Ecuador continues to position itself as one of the countries with the lowest rate in the region.

Unlike other Latin American countries, the CPI in Ecuador has remained at relatively low levels, reaching its peak in June 2022, when it climbed to 4.2% year-on-year.

For its part, monthly inflation was 0.09% in May, more than one tenth below the 0.2% registered last April. This is the third lowest number so far in 2023 and is among the five lowest in the last twelve months.

Of the twelve consumer divisions, four of them experienced monthly declines, while the other eight increased. The two with the greatest increase were food and non-alcoholic beverages (0.05%) and health (0.1%). For its part, none of the decreases was greater than 0.1%.
