The Holy See Press Office reported this Wednesday afternoon that Pope Francis has reacted well to the surgery performed at the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic, and that the operation and general anesthesia “passed without complications.”

“Pope Francis is attentive and aware and appreciates the many messages of closeness and prayer that have reached him immediately,” said the director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni.

In the second report issued this Wednesday, the Press Office indicated that Dr. Sergio Alfieri, director of the Department of Abdominal Surgical and Endocrine Metabolic Sciences, was in charge of the operation, assisted by other professionals, such as the doctor from the Health Directorate and Hygiene of the Vatican City State, Luigi Carbone.

Citing the information provided by Alfieri, it is indicated that the Holy Father underwent a scheduled surgery for “an incarcerated laparocele”, a hernia generated on the scar left by operations performed in previous years.

The doctor explained that, for a few months, this hernia had caused Pope Francis “a painful and progressive intestinal subocclusive syndrome.”

In this sense, he indicated that during the intervention some adhesions were found that were removed from the intestine and “the hernial defect was repaired through plastic surgery of the abdominal wall, with the help of a prosthetic mesh.”

Likewise, during a press conference at the Gemelli Hospital, it was reported that the Holy Father had “a benign pathology from which he has fully recovered” and that, in this sense, “he does not have any other disease.”

Pope Francis was admitted this Wednesday after presiding over the General Audience to undergo a scheduled surgery. It was indicated that his recovery will take a few days and that for this reason, as a precaution, all his activities have been suspended until Sunday, June 18.
