Berlin After six years at competitor Telefonica Deutschland (O2), Wolfgang Metze is drawn back to Deutsche Telekom. On August 1, he will take over responsibility for private customer business, as the Bonn-based Dax group announced. Metze becomes a member of the management board of Telekom Germany.
He then belongs to the team of Germany boss Srini Gopalan, who in turn is traded as a likely successor to CEO Tim Höttges. The Handelsblatt had already reported on Metze’s upcoming homecoming last summer.
Metze left his position as Chief Consumer Officer (CCO) at Telefonica a year ago at his own request.
At Telekom, 50-year-old Metze succeeds André Almeida, who will take care of investment issues in the future.
Central functions for Metze
Metze himself will be assigned important tasks: he will manage the broadband and mobile communications business and also be responsible for the fiber optic expansion in Germany, which needs to be accelerated. “My return to Telekom feels very good. I started here as a trainee 22 years ago,” said Metze, who is regarded as an experienced salesperson.
Gopalan referred to his “impressive track record”. According to insiders, Metze’s next career step is already certain. It is said that he was already identified in Bonn as a potential successor to Gopalan in 2021.
