The Vatican reported this Thursday that Pope Francis has spent a “quiet night” after surgery performed on Wednesday at the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome, Italy.

“The medical personnel who follow the postoperative evolution of the Pontiff report that Pope Francis has spent a quiet night, managing to rest for a long time; He is in good general condition, alert and breathing spontaneously”, reported the director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, this Thursday, June 8.

After being operated on June 7 in the afternoon for a “laparotomy and plastic surgery of the abdominal wall with a prosthesis”, the Pontiff is in “good condition”, he continued.

“Routine checkups are good. He will maintain the necessary postoperative rest throughout the day”, added Bruni.

The Holy Father, he indicated, is informed “of the messages of closeness and affection that have reached him in recent hours and expresses his gratitude, while asking that you continue to pray for him.”

Yesterday afternoon, the surgeon in charge, Dr. Sergio Alfieri, director of the Department of Abdominal Surgical and Metabolic Endocrine Sciences, mentioned that the Pope was conscious, awake and even joking after the operation, which had lasted three hours.

The journalists stand in front of the hospital, awaiting updates on the post-operative evolution. It is estimated that the recovery process could last between 5 and 7 days, due to the age of the Pontiff, 86 years.

For this reason, the Prefecture of the Papal Household, which is in charge of the Pontiff’s agenda, has canceled the audiences until June 18.

Meanwhile, messages of support and closeness to Pope Francis continue to arrive, coming from political leaders, representatives of Episcopal Conferences and faithful from all over the world.

He has also received messages from the little patients of the Bambino Gesù Children’s Hospital, who have dedicated drawings to cheer him up.

About the operation

The Holy Father underwent scheduled surgery for “an incarcerated laparocele,” a hernia generated on the scar left by operations performed in previous years.

Dr. Alfieri explained that, for a few months, this hernia had caused Pope Francis “a painful and progressive intestinal subocclusive syndrome.”

He also noted that during the intervention some adhesions had been found that were removed from the intestine and “the hernial defect was repaired by means of plastic surgery of the abdominal wall, with the help of a prosthetic mesh.”

Likewise, during a press conference at the Gemelli Hospital, it was reported that the Pope had “a benign pathology from which he has fully recovered” and that, in this sense, “he does not have any other disease.”

The Holy Father was admitted to the Hospital on Wednesday after presiding over the General Audience. He is in the “floor of the Popes”, located on the tenth floor.

This is the third time that the Pope has been admitted to the Gemelli Hospital for several days. The first was from July 4 to 14, 2021, when a part of his colon was removed. And the second, from March 29 to April 1, 2023, due to “infectious-based bronchitis.”
