A three-decker passenger boat with 400 people on board set sail from the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka for the Barguna district last Thursday night.

The boat caught fire on the Sukanda River in Jalahati district at around 3 am yesterday. The fire in the engine room spread rapidly to other parts of the boat.

Many people were trapped in the fire as all the early passengers were asleep. Many passengers jumped into the river to save their lives from the fire.

Upon learning of the fire, firefighters rushed to the scene and tried to extinguish the fire on the boat. The fire was extinguished after several hours of fighting.

However, many people aboard the boat were trapped in the fire. Many passengers were burnt to death in the fire. Also, many people died of suffocation due to smoke from the fire. Many have been hospitalized with serious injuries.

The death toll from the boat fire has risen to 41. Nine of the victims drowned in the river. In addition, 150 people injured in the blaze are being treated. There are fears that the death toll could rise as the condition of some of those receiving treatment is worrying.
