Women Defining Women in Contemporary Art from the Middle East and Beyond features 75 works by women artists who were born or live in what can be loosely called Islamic societies. Often perceived as voiceless and invisible, they are not. Each one, through her unique vision, is shaping not only her own definition of herself, but is also helping to redefine and empower women everywhere and challenge lingering stereotypes. Her art depicts a wide range of inventively and often ideologically conceived images of women, bearing witness to the rapid political changes and often accelerating social transformations taking place in territories stretching from Africa to Western and Central Asia, as well as in diaspora communities. Her powerful narratives are embedded in her art, expressing both personal and universal concerns. Through generations and working in different media.
