Cofepris creates the first Advertising Advisory Council

  • The new Cofepris Advertising Advisory Council is made up of public servants, academics, the media and the business sector.
  • It is a space for commenting, debating and deliberating on the actions in terms of advertising of the industries regulated by the Commission.

The Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) led the installation of the new Advertising Advisory Council. It is made up of dependencies and entities of the Federal Public Administration (APF), the academic and scientific community, the business sector, advertising media and broadcast media.

What are your goals?

This body, chaired by the head of Cofepris, Alejandro Svarch Perez, has among its objectives to analyze and give an opinion on the use and content of the codes of advertising ethics; support institutions in conducting studies on advertising; issue an opinion on matters presented by the Ministry of Health; make proposals for amendments to the applicable provisions regarding advertising; and serve as a consultative body for the elaboration of norms regarding advertising that may represent a risk to health.

Alejandro Svarch highlighted that the advisory body of Cofepris is made up of people with extensive experience, free of conflicts of interest and with a social conscience, of the people and for the people.

“We assembled a new council with knowledge and a clear awareness of the historical problems in health matters. We have summoned them to form a space to comment, debate and deliberate on the actions in terms of advertising of the industries that Cofepris regulates”.

As president of the Advertising Advisory Councilcalled on its members to occupy the space for the pronouncement on distorted, manipulative, overwhelming and oppressive messages “that seek to profit from poverty, disease and suffering as a result of the neoliberal industry and the lack of political conviction of those who preceded us ”.

The General Coordinator of Social Communication and spokesperson for the Government of Mexico, Jesus Ramirez Cuevasargued that talking about advertising is talking about the heart of communication in a market economy.

“Advertising is at the center of society. It is a political, cultural and, above all, interest issue. Today we are facing a unique opportunity to change society’s relationship with the market and we must bet on that without fundamentalisms or ideologies involved, thinking about health, the environment and the responsibility that the market, companies and the society”.

The Commissioner for Sanitary Operation of Cofepris, Bertha Mayor Lujan, exposed to the members of the council the verification actions that the health authority carries out to products and advertising messages on television, print media, radio and internet. He affirmed that deception products, food and non-alcoholic beverages, and tobacco products are priority axes of Cofepris in terms of advertising.

Who makes up the Cofepris Advertising Advisory Council?

It was announced that the council will meet at least once every three months and its decisions will be unanimous. It was made up of the general coordinator of Social Communication and spokesperson for the Government of Mexico, Jesús Ramírez; the federal commissioner of Cofepris, Alejandro Svarch; the commissioners of Sanitary Operation, Bertha María Alcalde, and Cofepris Sanitary Development, Pablo Alberto Quiroga Adame, as well as the deputy director of the Federal Commissioner’s Office, Nemer Alexander Naime Sánchez-Henkel.

Likewise, the president of the National Institute for Women (Inmujeres), Nadine Gasman Zylberman; the member of the National Commission for Mental Health and Addictions (Conasama), Gady Zabicky Sirot; the president of the Public Broadcasting System (SPR) of the Mexican State, Jenaro Villamil Rodríguez; the director of the Mexican Radio Institute (IMER), Aleida Calleja Gutiérrez; the director of Channel Once, Carlos Brito Lavalle; and the general director of the Fondo de Cultura Económica (FCE), Paco Ignacio Taibo II.

Also the general director of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), Arturo Reyes Sandoval; the director of the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences of the UNAM, Carola García Calderón; the telecommunications researcher from the Panamerican University, Clara Luz Álvarez González; the general director of Argos Media Group, Epigmenio Carlos Ibarra Almada; the director of El Poder del Consumidor, Alejandro Calvillo Unna; the president of the Health Commission of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE), Patrick Devlyn Jr; and the nutrition officer at Unicef, Fiorella Espinosa de Cándido.
