Pope Francis spent his second night at the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome “without setbacks,” according to the Holy See Press Office on Friday, June 9.

“Pope Francis has rested overnight. The medical team reports that the clinical picture is progressively improving and the postoperative course is normal”, were the words of Matteo Bruni, the director of the Holy See Press Office.

“After breakfast, His Holiness began to move, spending most of the morning in an easy chair. This allowed him to read the newspapers and resume his work,” she added.

Pope Francis underwent abdominal surgery on the afternoon of June 7. The surgery, which lasted about three hours, was successful and since then his health has been improving.

During the previous day, the Pontiff rested and ate a liquid diet.

The doctor in charge of operating on the Pope was Dr. Sergio Alfieri, director of the hospital’s Department of Abdominal Surgical and Endocrine Metabolic Sciences, who has performed more than 9,000 surgeries throughout his career.

“The operation was for a benign pathology,” confirmed the 57-year-old doctor.

The Holy Father, according to the doctors who treated him, will lead a “normal” life again and will resume his schedule and travel, but he should not make physical exertion on the abdominal part or stand for a long time.

For now, it has not been confirmed if this Sunday the Pontiff will be able to pray the Angelus, together with the faithful, from one of the windows on the tenth floor of the Hospital.

For now, messages of closeness and wishes for a speedy recovery continue to arrive for the Holy Father, who was already admitted to the Gemelli Polyclinic two months ago due to infectious pneumonia.
