The Biden administration imposed sanctions on seven members of the group and one organization related to Russian intelligence. Their involvement in destabilizing the democratically elected Moldovan government is likely, Turan’s Washington correspondent said.

Secretary of State Anthony Blinken condemned “destabilization operations” in Moldova and announced sanctions. He said: “The Kremlin continues its secret efforts to destabilize democratic countries with the help of negative influence operations.

Today we are announcing the names of seven members of a Russian intelligence-linked group and one legal entity in Moldova for their involvement in destabilizing operations in Moldova.

The Ministry of Finance announced the names of the persons: Konstantin Sapojnikov, Yuri Makolov, Gleb Khloponin, Svetlana Boyko, Alexey Losev, Vasili Gromovikov and Anna Travnikova.

These persons are related to Moldovan oligarch Ilan Shor, who is currently in Israel. Shor heads the pro-Russian Shor Party, which supports the “Movement for the sake of the people” that organized anti-government protests in Chisinau this year.

According to Blinken, those individuals are part of Russia’s global information operations targeting Russia, as well as the United States, the European Union, Great Britain and the Balkan countries.

These operations are aimed at weakening support for democratic governments and principles. Individuals incite, train, and control groups to organize anti-government protests and demonstrations to overthrow democratically elected leaders and create instability or worsen the situation in democracies.

Blinken said the United States, along with its allies and partners, will continue to expose, disrupt and counter Russian disinformation campaigns.

The United States will also support Moldova in reforms aimed at strengthening democracy, promoting a prosperous and secure future, deepening integration with Europe, and increasing respect for human rights.
