On the screen, fixed to the wall, images of cells under the microscope scroll by. A rib tumor in a 16-year-old boy whose clinical presentation suggests Ewing’s sarcoma (malignant bone tumor). About fifteen “anapath”, short for anatomopathologist, are gathered this Tuesday, May 30 for the weekly staff meeting in the Curie Institute, in Paris. On the menu, a dozen complex cases to discuss. Professor Anne Vincent-Salomon, who directs the pathological anatomy and cytology department, pilots it.

They scrutinize samples of cells, tissues and fluids from biopsies. Here, the tumor could correspond to a chondrosarcoma, a malignant tumor developed from cartilage, but under the microscope, no cell division. “There is no atypia, which suggests, at this age, that the tumor is benign”says Paul Fréneaux, pathologist.

A molecular analysis confirms his hypothesis. “This example illustrates the way we reason: to make the diagnosis, we take into account the clinical context, the age of course, the appearance of the tumor that we have on our histological slides, radiology and molecular biology »explains Anne Vincent-Salomon. “When you skip one of these steps, you can make mistakes. In this case, age is decisive here. The same tumor in a 60-year-old man would correspond to a malignant tumor”, adds Dr. Fréneaux. This is good news that the pediatrician can announce to the patient and his parents.

A fundamental human dimension

Passionate, with sparkling blue eyes, Anne Vincent-Salomon became director of women’s cancer institute, having obtained the university hospital institute (IHU) label with eleven other projects chosen by the government. The Institut Curie, the University of Paris Sciences et Lettres (PSL) and Inserm participate in this structure which aims “to reduce mortality from female cancers and the impact of cancer on the quality of life of women, from very basic research to the social sciences, with the strong participation of patients and caregivers”, specifies the doctor and researcher, for whom the human dimension is fundamental. Each year, in France, 78,000 new cases of female cancers, including 60,000 breast cancers, are recorded as well as 20,000 deaths.

Under his wing, a total of 200 people in the diagnostic and theranostic medicine center, which aims to diagnose and finely characterize tumors to adapt the treatment as well as possible. This houses the two pathology departments of the Institut Curie in Paris and Saint-Cloud, the genetics department and the hemobiology and immunology units. “I am lucky to have a great team, very diverse in their training profiles. » Technicians, doctors, agents, researchers… they work in a maze of offices. Since November 2022, histological slides have been digitized.
