A few days before the start of winter, epidemiological statistics from the Ministry of Health indicate that six out of ten Argentines who belong to risk groups, with a recommendation to get vaccinated to prevent gripe, they haven’t done it yet. This despite the fact that -for them- the vaccine is free. The same is true of immunization against pneumonia and with the vaccine that prevents the complications of covid-19: they also have low compliance.

These data were revealed by a group of infectologists affiliated with the Argentine Society of Vaccinology and Epidemiology. As pointed out by members of the SAVE, today there are about 33 million Argentines who did receive their primary scheme against SARS-CoV-2 but who are in a position to receive their reinforcements, since more than six months have passed since their last dose. In the same way, it is estimated that the levels of prevention rates suggested with respect to the prevention of pneumonia are not being reached either.

According to the figures presented by the infectologist Florence CahnAt the end of last May, 1.6 million people over 65 years of age had barely received their annual flu vaccine. And among people with risk factors of all ages, just 1.1 million. Continuing with these worrying data, only 25% of pregnant women received the recommended vaccine. And, the strangest thing, is the figure that emerges when analyzing the health team personnel: 4 out of 10 members decided not to get immunized against influenza, despite being a social group highly susceptible to these infections due to the nature of their own job.

What are the reasons of this situation of negligence regarding one of the safest and most proven ways that help prevent thousands of hospitalizations and deaths? As she told PROFILE Analía Urueñainfectologist and director of SAVE, “after the years of pandemic we are registering a kind of ‘fatigue’ with respect to all vaccines.”

“This happens especially in the two extremes of life, the little ones and the older adults. And also in those who have heart, kidney, metabolic, liver, cancer or immunosuppression disease (due to HIV/AIDS, chemotherapy, corticosteroids, etc.), he explained. Andrea Uboldi, pediatric infectologist and director of this professional association.

The irony is that, in a very high percentage, they are situations that can be prevented with a simple immunization.

Seeking to reverse this situation, the campaign was launched ‘La Posta is to get vaccinated’ which includes health centers, PAMI pharmacies and mobile vaccination points throughout the country.
