Petro sets the process of higher education reform for the next semester – Government – Politics

On Saturday, President Gustavo Petro was in Paz del Río (Boyacá), celebrating a new ‘Government Listen’ event, the meeting he has with different communities every weekend. Among the many issues, the president touched again on the issue of the reform of Law 30, related to higher education.

On this occasion, the president ordered the organization of student assemblies whose contributions will serve to “prepare the reform of the higher education law.” It is expected that this project will be presented next semester and will be the great bet of the Executive.

“The entire student movement in Colombia must be summoned to assemblies for the reform of Law 30, which must be presented after July 20 and must have maximum youth participation,” the president told the residents of Paz del Río.

In this sense, he reiterated that the student movement must stand out “based on the reform of Law 30, which means the reform of higher education in Colombia.”

Since last Wednesday, the president has emphasized the reform of higher education. This is how he announced it in his speech at the mobilizations that he called for June 7.

“We are going for the reform of Law 30 of higher education so that Colombian youth can access a right that is to be educated, because to be educated is also in the human being to be able to live with dignity. These are the reforms that were shouted at us in the public square before to win the Presidency of the Republic”, was what the president said in his speech on Wednesday.

This project had already been announced since the beginning of the year, when it was included in an ambitious process plan in Congress that was not fulfilled. Since Wednesday, the president has put the future project back on the scene.

In-depth details about the initiative are not yet known. However, some of the recurring issues regarding education are the need to solve financing problems in the public sector and the need to expand its coverage and quotas in it.
