DATE OF THE 2023 ELECTIONS: The High Authority for Communication (HAC) must sanction the magazine “Jeune Afrique”

June 7, 2023

As a political party called to take part in the elections of this year 2023, REAGIR, like many Gabonese, was surprised to learn on June 06, 2023 by the magazine “Jeune Afrique” that the date of the presidential and legislative elections was fixed for September 2nd, through the following affirmative title:

“The presidential election in Gabon will take place on September 2”.

Because Article 74 of the Electoral Code provides that it is the Gabonese Elections Center (CGE) which sets the date of the elections before the Government ratifies it by publication in the official journal of the decree relating thereto. However, to date, this procedure has not been officially initiated. Similarly, setting the date of the 2023 presidential election on September 2 would violate article 11 of the Constitution.

This announcement widely relayed by the local press violates article 44 of the Communication Code which requires that: ” Every journalist (…) must ensure that the information he disseminates is fair and accurate and avoid expressing comments and conjectures on unverified facts “. This is all the more so as, in its publication of June 07, 2023, the pro-government newspaper ” L’Union “, After checking with the competent authorities, denies this information published the day before.

This approach of the magazine “Jeune Afrique”, in addition to maintaining confusion and misinformation within public opinion, tramples on respect for national laws.

REAGIR, in accordance with the law, therefore invites the High Authority for Communication (HAC) to sanction these excesses of the magazine “Jeune Afrique” which could be repeated and contribute to disturbing the electoral process.
