In the first minutes of concentration at the São Paulo LGBTQIA+ Pride Parade, which takes place this Sunday (11), a drag queen dressed as Rita Lee monopolized the attention of those who arrived early to the act. With orange hair made of foam, huge blue sequins glued to his eyelids and a black snake made of recycled materials slithering over his shoulder, Luiz Maurício strolled down Avenida Paulista like the incarnation of rock music. “I’m here to make people happy, like she always did. Without prejudice and without poison”, he says, pointing to the plastic snake in a comical hiss.
Rita died last month at the age of 75. Founder of Palco dos Bonecos, a puppet group that honors MPB artists, Maurício even thought about bringing a half-meter version of Rita to the Parade, but thought the puppet would not do well in the typical crowd at the event.
He, who has performed with the artist a few times over the last ten years, was just one of several present who decided to honor music divas. Gal Costa, another recently deceased iconic Brazilian voice, graced a huge poster that also attracted the flashes of professional cameras and cell phones.
Whenever chef Rey Perez opened the cardboard full of collages, applause rose from the crowd that slowly filled Paulista. It’s so she won’t be forgotten, he says, that he considers her as much an LGBTQIA+ icon as any foreign pop diva.
In this area, howls unmistakably belonging to the opening passages of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” were sung by one of those present, who elicited similar howls or applause from those around.
Even MC Pipokinha was remembered, as a group of about 30 people entered the road through one of the side streets, repeating one of the funkeira phrases: “Put it on Pipokinha, put it on, put it on Pipokinha”.
