San Salvador. Within the framework of the celebration of World Oceans Day, Corona El Salvador beer joins the World Surf League (WSL) One Ocean for the care of the oceans with the project “Placement of fluvial interception barriers” to collect the plastic that navigate in the rivers and prevent it from reaching the ocean.

It is estimated that by the end of 2024, 40 tons of plastics will be collected from the river barriers.

The objective is to reduce the use of plastics in coastal tourism by 10% during the project period and increase by 20% the proportion of recycled consumer plastic in Las Flores beach (San Miguel) and Punta Chilama (La Libertad) with the tourism and food industry contest.

It is expected to intervene 100 rivers worldwide in the next five years. According to scientists and researchers from Science Advances, 80% of the plastic that reaches the oceans is through rivers.

“We dream big, we want to contribute to a balanced world, and with this project we come together to reduce the impact of plastic on marine fauna,” said Carol Colorado, Legal and Corporate Affairs Director of La Constancia.

In addition, we will carry out an awareness campaign with fishermen and residents of the Chilama River and we will invite them to participate in reducing the use of plastics and protecting the environment, Colorado concluded.

The placement of the barrier was carried out on June 7 to celebrate World Oceans Day, intervening in the Chilama River, in La Libertad.

The project includes the recovery and maintenance of interception barriers to make it permanent, through the periodic removal of garbage and other debris from the floating barriers.

The installation of the fluvial barrier is coordinated with the coastal tourism development associations, bridges between the municipal government and the Ministry of Tourism.

Two river barriers are currently in place to protect some of El Salvador’s most emblematic breakers on the central coast and in the surf destination known as Oriente Salvaje.

Surfers will enjoy waves free of debris and local and international tourists, the natural beauty of the country’s coast.

The protected breaks include Punta Roca and its most powerful waves in the country where the WSL Surf City El Salvador Pro Tour is being held this week, La Bocana and El Sunzal, on the central coast (part of the Surf City circuit).

The project contemplates benefiting Punta Mango beach (Usulután) and Las Flores (San Miguel) as part of Oriente Salvaje. As the program develops over the next year, it will be expanded to other rivers to combat plastic pollution near the surf.

As part of the activities of the WSL Surf City El Salvador Pro, surfers also came together to install the fluvial interception barrier on the Chilama River, and support the recovery and processing of waste from fluvial barriers for recycling or reuse.
