He had hinted at it in March in the columns of Le Parisien, it is now formalized by the Nanterre club. Pascal Donnadieu, 59, emblematic coach of Nanterre since 1987, will leave his post at the end of next season to take up those of sports director. His assistant, Philippe Da Silva, will succeed him on the bench. The latter, 43, has signed up for the next two seasons.

Also assistant coach of the Blues, Donnadieu led the Hauts-de-Seine club from the lowest level of French basketball to the title of champion of France 2013 and a Euroleague campaign the following season.

The “JSF” (formerly “Jeunesse Sportive des Fontenelles”, before becoming “Nanterre 92”) also won two French Cups under its leadership, in 2014 and 2017, as well as two European titles, the Eurochallenge 2015 and the European Cup in 2017.

“What more, better can I hope for? »

“I am stopping my career as a coach after the Paris Games in 2024, confided the interested party to Parisian on March 10. It’s the most beautiful of competitions and it will be at home, I don’t see what better I could hope for for my last game in the coaching costume, although in this case it will be that of assistant in the French team. »

The man of all the successes in Nanterre is therefore preparing to write the last chapter of a huge book. Arrived on the bench of the club in 1987 at the lowest departmental level at the request of the president, his father Jean, the former bank employee was the coach of all the victories. In 24 years, he allowed Nanterre to climb 11 divisions without ever experiencing failure, or slipping at the lower level, to settle at the highest hexagonal level.

With Nanterre, he won seven trophies on the national and international stages, including the title of champion of France in 2013.

“My career has given me everything, much more than I could have imagined when I started, continued Donnadieu three months ago. With Nanterre, we won everything it was possible to win – I’m not talking about the Euroleague -, apart from the Leaders Cup (ex-Semaine des As). What more, better, can I hope for? In the French team (where he was promoted to Vincent Collet’s right-hand man after the 2016 Games), we won 3 medals in 4 competitions (silver at Euro 2022 and the Tokyo Games in 2021, and bronze at the 2019 World Cup). I consider my career to be a real fairy tale. In my head, it’s been clear for a long time already. At some point, you have to know how to hand over, leave it to others to continue to grow. You have to know when to stop and prepare for what comes next. »
