The Minister of Public Health, José Ruales, participated as a speaker in the European Union (EU) – Ecuador Seminar: “Fighting misinformation on health issues and human mobility”, held in the Próceres room of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility , in Quito, this June 12. The meeting took place within the framework of the follow-up and dialogue on Human Rights that the EU has with the government of Ecuador for the period 2021-2024.

In his speech, Minister Ruales said that false news was born 70 years ago in the country, in the field of health, with tobacco consumption campaigns. In this context, he assured: “Public health information contributes to raising awareness about health risks and how to prevent them.”

In addition, he pointed out that misinformation represents a threat to public health and violates people’s universal right of access to health. According to the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INEC), 40% of the population was exposed to misinformation during the pandemic.

Within the strategies to guarantee access to health for people on the move, this State portfolio executes several specific actions. We generate a temporary code as an identifier or number of your Unique Clinical Record, which allows you to provide care to users without any type of restriction.

Similarly, binational medical brigades are permanently maintained to care for people in transit and at border crossings. The authorized points are in: Carchi (Rumichaca Surveillance Post), Sucumbíos (San Miguel Surveillance Post); El Oro (Surveillance post at CEBAF), and in major cities such as Quito, Guayaquil and Manta.

The attentions to this group in 2022 were 482,719. On the other hand, in the first half of 2023, 150,501 services were registered. Between 2021-2023, hospital discharges were 77,847; of which 71.4% correspond to people of Venezuelan nationality, 22.3% Colombian, 4.9% Peruvian, 0.7% Cuban and 0.5% American. Between 2020 and 2022, 27,263 births to the foreign population were attended.
