Companies that commit serious discriminatory offenses against interns may face sanctions of up to 225,018 euros, according to the text of the Scholarship Statute agreed between the Ministry of Labor and the unions.

The agreement, which has the opposition of employers and rectors, establishes a penalty regime with fines for companies of between 120,006 and 225,018 euros in the event of very serious infractions in their maximum degree. The very serious in its minimum degree will be penalized with amounts between 7,501 to 30,000 euros, while in its medium degree they will be from 30,001 to 120,005 euros.

Discrimination based on kinship ties with other workers in the company or Spanish own languagesas well as unfavorable treatment of workers as a reaction to a claim made in the company or to an administrative or judicial action aimed at demanding compliance with the principle of equal treatment and non-discrimination.

The Statute of the Scholar contemplates a compulsory compensation for the expenses of the scholarship holders to carry out the internships, which has caused the rejection of the rectors, who consider that… that this will reduce the number of companies that choose to train students. The compensation must have “a minimum amount” to cover the “travel, accommodation or living expenses”.

The extracurricular internships carried out during the studies must not exceed 15% of the hours in which the ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System) of the degree are completed or 480 hours.

Internships carried out during studies linked to Universities’ own titles have also been included, when the total sum of curricular and extracurricular internships does not exceed 25% of the ECTS credits of the corresponding degree.

Own titles that have a minimum duration of 60 ECTS credits will have the possibility of establishing internships for a period of three months.

For their part, trainee students must join the company in the agreed date, meet the scheduled schedule in the educational project and respect the rules of operation, safety and occupational risk prevention of the same, as well as develop the training project and comply with the activities agreed with the company, in accordance with the lines established therein.

Other obligations of the fellows will be keep confidential in relation to the internal information of the company and keep professional secrecy about its activities, during the period of practical training and after it; o Show, at all times, a respectful attitude towards company policy.
