The European RoboCup Junior competition was held in Croatia over the weekend. From Szeged, the team Ritmikus Bytes of the SZTE Vocational High School and Primary School was able to participate in the robot theater category of the European Championship for under 10s, after they won the Hungarian Youth Robot Cup in April and thus qualified themselves. The students of teacher Judit Özvegy added a completely new robot to the winning set in the Nyíregyháza competition.

Bence brought a xylophone robot that he programmed and can play two kinds of tunes. Only people over the age of 12 used to program this, so we were very proud of him, and if he did it, of course we included it in the competition kit – smiled the teacher. The team thus took a total of 11 robots to Croatia

– including the set worth almost HUF 2 million that the Somogyi Library lent them. Some danced, others followed the drawn path, and there were two LEGO structures that communicated with each other, so that if one stopped, the other didn’t continue either. Essentially, all of these were already ready, but on the other hand, preparing for the international competition is still very stressful.

The children had to present their robots and themselves in English. Since we are talking about children in the second and third grades, this required serious preparation

said the teacher.

But we also had to create a tableau, as well as a stage set and a video about the team. In addition, we added color to the scene with a background video, which responded to the movements of the robots in time, in accordance with the stage production

– listed how much preparation was involved in the mere 7 minutes that the children spent on stage at the European Championship, including loading and unloading.

We found out from the team that there was a small glitch in their performance. Since the teacher could not help them while they were carrying their belongings onto the stage, the track on which their robots had to move was broken. The stage lights also disturbed the robots moving onto the stage, so their first round presentation did not go perfectly. In addition, they couldn’t bear not to touch the robots, which was forbidden here. Fortunately, there are two opportunities to try, since in this competition the teams cannot even practice on the stage, they have to practically experience the conditions there first. However, after some recalibration and track correction, everything was perfect in the second lap. The jury also singled out their performance, which ultimately proved to be the best in the international field. But not only the judges, the opponents also liked the presentation in Szeged, several types of robots were not even known to the teams of other countries, so they inquired about them.

Team members Villő Nagy Iringó, Mirella Kira Molnár-Eiserle, Nóra Izabella Soós, Júlia Takács Angelika and Bence Sándor each received a certificate and a medal, and of course also a plaque, which goes to the European champion. Many of them cannot rest even now, as they are preparing for the World Robot Olympiad, which will be held in Győr at the end of June, with a completely different set.
