Households intending to leave this summer plan an average budget of nearly 2,000 euros, according to Cofidis.

Despite inflation, the French seem ready to do anything to preserve their summer break. But the rise in prices will not be without consequences for their holidays, and sacrifices will have to be made. This is what emerges from a CSA Research survey for Cofidis*, published on Tuesday. Compared to last summer, the average budget of the 60% of French people intending to leave – down three points compared to 2022 – jumped by more than 20%, from 1641 to 1986 euros. This one “fluctuates between generations“, however underlines Cofidis, since it amounts for example to 1689 euros for 18-24 year olds against 2204 euros for 50 years and over.

At the same time, even if the planned budget increases, so do the restrictions. They are seven holidaymakers out of ten (71%) to have the feeling of having to restrict their holiday budget this summer, ie 7 points more than last year. Inflation, which affects the current budget, is naturally on the bench of the first accused (58%). However, other reasons are also mentioned, such as major spending plans for the coming months (15%), financial unforeseen events in recent months (9%) or initial vacation plans costing too much (9% ).

Souvenirs and restaurants sacrificed

This holiday budget, on the rise, therefore turns out to be just as constrained. In particular for certain items, such as pleasure purchases and souvenirs (59%), then restaurants and food (52%) and outings, activities and leisure (41%). Conversely, transport (16%), housing (23%) and the number of overnight stays (28%) are more immune to budget cuts. Anxious to optimize their budget, households resort to different strategies. Among the most cited are the choice of holiday dates allowing better rates (31%), anticipation when booking accommodation and transport in order to pay less (25%) or the priority given to a destination based on promotions found at the time of booking (21%).

To finance their holidays, digging into their current budget is the solution preferred by the French (43%). Many are those who do not hesitate to draw on their personal savings (37%), for example in their savings account A or their company savings plan. Another proof of the preponderant place of holidays in the life of the French.

*Study carried out on a sample of 1006 French people, representative of the French population aged 18 and over. Self-administered sample online from May 23 to 25, 2023, constituted according to the quota method on the following criteria: sex, age, profession, region of residence and category of agglomeration.
