An innovative treatment that started to be given these days at Beilinson Hospital is real news for kidney cancer patients. The good news is that it is targeted radiation therapy as an alternative to surgery. These days, for the first time, a 20-minute radiation treatment will be performed at the Davidoff Center in Bilinson, which prevents the need for surgery in cases where the patient does not undergo an autopsy. Dr. Elisha Fredman, a senior physician in the radiation therapy unit at the Davidoff Cancer Center, who brought Bilinson the innovative treatment from the United States, said: “Studies show that 95% of cases are treated successfully and without harming their quality of life.”

The Radiotherapy Institute at the Davidoff Center in Beilinson Hospital is one of the most innovative and active in the State of Israel. Dr. Fredman, a senior physician at the Institute of Radiotherapy, brought with him from the United States a groundbreaking medical treatment that allows kidney cancer patients to undergo rapid and targeted radiation therapy directly to the tumor area in cases where surgery is not possible. The treatment does not require hospitalization, it lasts about 20 minutes, and after that the patient returns to his home. 95% of cases are treated successfully and without significant side effects according to a study recently published in the prestigious journal Lancet Oncology.

Kidney cancer is usually diagnosed in the sixth or seventh decade of life. Surgery to remove a tumor is the accepted treatment as of today, but it is a complex procedure, especially in the elderly. Focused radiation therapy provides fast and effective treatment that allows the patient to continue his daily life without significant interruption.

In 2022, a comprehensive study by an international group was published in the prestigious journal Lancet Oncology. The study examined 190 patients from around the world and showed that the radiation therapy is effective in 95% of the patients, and does not involve significant side effects.

Dr. Friedman said this week: “This is good news for hundreds of patients a year. My patients are very surprised when I tell them that there are cases where there is an easier option than surgery. This treatment could give thousands of older people in Israel more long, quality years with their dear family members. I feel lucky that we have the opportunity to offer a research-based treatment that is excellent, fast and safe.”

Dr. Dror Limon, Director of the Radiation Institute at the Davidoff Center: “Until today, patients did not have many choices when it came to kidney cancer treatment, so this is a huge change in kidney cancer treatment. It is up to our parents’ generation to do everything in our power so that we do not compromise on the quality of life of the third generation.”
