Following events that have affected at least half a dozen other comparable institutions in recent months, the Kaiserslautern University of Applied Sciences (HS Kaiserslautern) has become the latest German-speaking university to be targeted by a ransomware attack. HS Kaiserslautern is one of the leading universities of applied sciences in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, which is located in the western part of Germany. It is also the most recent German-speaking institution with an emphasis on applied sciences to be attacked by cybercriminals in recent months. There are around 6,200 students attending this educational institution, and almost all the facilities and services provided to them have been disrupted. According to a statement issued by the institution, all university facilities, including computer labs and even the library, “would remain closed until further notice.”

As this is a ransomware attack, workstations at staff workplaces may also be affected; Students and staff have been warned not to turn on any of their work computers. On Friday, the university used an emergency web page to report the problem, saying that “their entire IT infrastructure had been taken down. This included the university’s email accounts as well as the phone system.

It’s unclear who the criminals are, nor is it clear if the information was taken from university systems as part of a sophisticated extortion effort before the hackers attempted to encrypt it. Furthermore, it is unknown whether the hackers managed to encrypt the material.
