Italian sprinter Marcell Jacobs, reigning Olympic champion in the 100 meters, gave up Tuesday to compete in the next Euro athletics team (June 20 to 25 in Poland) due to persistent sciatica.

Jacobs must “take additional time for care and specific training, until the problem is completely resolved“, in particular in order to arrive in optimal shape at the Budapest Worlds (August 19-27), explained the Italian Federation (Fidal) in a press release.

The European record holder in the 100 meters had already had to draw a line under his first two meetings of the season on the straight, because of this back problem, in Rabat (May 28) then in Florence (June 2) .

Last Friday, the Italian, Olympic champion in Tokyo in 2021 in the 100m and 4x100m, was finally able to make his comeback during the Diamond League stage in Paris. Reduced, he was however unable to fight, quickly overwhelmed and only seventh on the finish line in 10 sec 21/100 (wind of -0.9 m/s).

According to the Italian Federation, Jacobs suffers from an inflammation of the sciatic nerve at the level of the upper right thigh, “probably due to stretching of the piriformis muscle».

It was therefore decided to continue the course of care already launched in order to “allow the athlete to have fully recovered in the most important phase of the season, scheduled for the second half of August with the World Championships in Budapest“, explained Fidal.
