This week Lelystad is dominated by the campaign ‘Lelystad drinks water!’. JOGG Lelystad ‘Healthy Youth Healthy Future’ campaign draws attention to drinking water. On the first campaign day, Alderman Rinze Broekema and mascot Druppie, together with children from the Color Fountain location of GO! Childcare, the campaign kicked off.

The alderman reflected on the importance of drinking enough water and that it is a healthy and tasty alternative to sweet drinks. Both the little ones from the day care and the children from the BSO were there. They participated enthusiastically in making fruit water, with fruit made available by AH Voorhof and a water quiz. The alderman then handed over the drink plate to the children of the adjacent primary schools De Wingerd and De Rainbow.

Various locations of GO! Childcare organize activities around drinking water throughout the week. There is a water drinking day on the calendar for the baby group, the toddlers will do calculations with cups of water and the BSO groups will get started with the drinks board game and fun water experiments.

Why the ‘Lelystad drinks water!’ campaign?

Research shows that 1 in 4 children in Lelystad is overweight. This is double the number compared to the national figure. In addition, research shows that less than half of primary school children drink water or tea without sugar every day. Children drink a lot of sweetened drinks or juices that contain sugar. This also applies to the young people in Lelystad. 35 percent of young people indicate that they drink sugary drinks every day. Drinks without sugar are good thirst quenchers, such as water and tea without sugar. Drinking water instead of sweetened drinks reduces the risk of cavities in the teeth, obesity and better concentration and performance. The campaign therefore focuses on raising awareness of the benefits of drinking water among children, young people and their parents.

Who is participating in the campaign?

Various organizations in Lelystad are paying extra attention to drinking water this week, such as Challenge Up, Huis voor Taal and the Voorleesexpres from Welfare Lelystad, FlevoMeer Library, Sports Company Lelystad, consultation offices of Icare, Youth Health Care of GGD Flevoland, the Lemonade Brigade, locations GO ! childcare, the Municipality of Lelystad and various schools including Porteum.
