José Gomes announced, this Tuesday, the departure of Marítimo. The 52-year-old coach, who landed in Madeira in December, was emotional after the island emblem’s relegation to the second tier.
′′ I still feel the grip in my heart for the fans and what they are feeling. It’s really a grip that won’t go away. I can only compare it to the death of a close relative”, he confessed, in statements to RTP Madeira.

Asked about the reasons that led to this end of season, José Gomes referred to numerous factors: «For mistakes, for bad decisions, for lack of concentration, for slips, for incompetence of any kind and, many times, for mistakes that have nothing to do with to do with us and that have harmed us in many games», he revealed.
«We did hard work, I gave myself to the cause maritime with my blood, with my sweat and it wasn’t enough. My feeling is one of frustration.», he added.
However, the coach highlighted the support he had from the directors: «Since I arrived, the Board has given all the support. Nothing was missing. It would be enormously cowardly of me at this point to say that I was alone, which is not true, that it is not my fault, which is not true. Responsibility in a team is like a cake. There are slices for everyone. I ate my share», he concluded.
It should be recalled that, despite José Gomes’ declarations, the emblem green-heading has not yet officially announced the coach’s departure.
