A small but precious festival ends today with the announcement of the winners

from Nicola Signorile

Buone the first. The Vicoli Corti – Cinema di Periferia festival is about to conclude its sixteenth edition, the first in the hall, at the Cineteatro Spadaro in Massafra. We knew that the period for indoor cinema is among the least favorable – explains the artistic director, Vincenzo Madaro (with the cinematographic consultancy of Massimo Causo and Davide Di Giorgio), on the eve of the last day of the event conceived by the Il Serraglio association – but we are happy with the result. I think we will return to the usual outdoor version, our usual audience represented 70% by spectators who come from other cities. We will keep the mornings and formative moments in the winter. A part that this year Vicoli Corti has had the opportunity to develop with training courses on cinematographic language addressed to more than 40 teachers in the area, realized with the collaboration of the Giffoni Film Festival and projections and shows dedicated to students. The forays into other artistic fields such as the show are noteworthy Cabaret Sacco & Vanzetti of the Borgia Theater (in partnership with the Crest theater cooperative) or Etopa, the cross-media sound project of Taranto old, in collaboration with the Collettivo Zeugma, curated by the sound artists Francesco Giannico and Anacleto Vitolo, whose video-sound installation will be presented this evening during the final ceremony.

But the final day at the Spadaro film theater, one of the oldest cinemas in Puglia founded in 1914 and unfortunately closed in 2019, begins today with two Italian-made animated films: at 10, Trash – The legend of the magical pyramid from Luca Della Grotta and Francesco Dafano, special mention at the Verdone Award of the last European Film Festival in Lecce and, at 5 pm, Yaya and Lennie by Alessandro Rak. A little gem of yesteryear for horror fans at 7pm: in collaboration with Monsters Taranto Horror Film Festival will be screened Frankenstein from J. Searle Dawley, silent short film from 1910, the first film adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel of the same name, the copy of which, for years nowhere to be found, was then fished out in the archives of a collector in the 1950s and, in 2018, restored by the United States Library of Congress. The fulcrum of Vicoli Corti remains the double short-long soul: on the one hand, the competition of 12 short films among the best in circulation, from The Criminals by Serhat Karaaslan, who moved to Sundance, a Goads by Iris Baglanea e Big from Daniele Pini (the winner will be revealed tonight); on the other hand, the review of first and second works, many in regional previews, which led to Spadaro films such as Stop-Zemlia by Kateryna Gornostai, selected in 2021 at the Berlinale and at the Giffoni Film Festival, The apprenticeship from Davide Maldi (jury prize at the Torino Film Festival), Regina by Alessandro Grande, recently awarded the Ciak d’oro for best new director, to close tonight, at 8.45 pm, with the beautiful third feature film signed by Jonas Carpignano, A Chiara, fresh from the Cannes Film Festival. Free admission (with reservation), info on vicolicorti.it.
