Belarus begins receiving Russian tactical nuclear weapons

The President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, said that his country has started to receive nuclear weapons from Russia, as part of a defense measure signed by the two countries in March of this year. The politician made the statement on Tuesday 13, during an interview with a Russian state TV station.

It is the first time since the fall of Soviet Unionin 1991, that the Kremlin transfers this type of weaponry out of Russian territory. Russia and Belarus maintain strong political ties.

The Belarusian president declared that some of the artifacts are three times more powerful than the atomic bombs dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, during the Second World Warem 1945.

The decision to keep the weapons in the neighboring country is strategic for Russia. In addition to bordering Ukraine, Belarus borders important Eastern European countries that make up the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), such as Poland, Latvia and Lithuania.

Russian weapons are America’s answer

The Russian movement is a response promised by the president Vladimir Putinwhich accused the United States of deploying tactical nuclear weapons in allied countries.

Despite criticizing Putin’s decision, the USA have said they do not intend to change the very deployment of strategic nuclear weapons. The US government has also said it sees no signs that Russia intends to use a nuclear weapon during the conflict in Ukraine.
