Nick Kyrgios was tired of doing the show. The very controversial Australian tennis star confides in the new episode of the series “Break Point”, broadcast on Netflix from June 21, that he considered committing suicide during Wimbledon 2019. The 25th player in the world was even admitted to a psychiatric hospital after his defeat against Rafael Nadal in the 2nd round on the London lawn.

“I was actually thinking about killing myself,” he says in the series, according to The Australian newspaper. He also explains that he wore sleeves on his right arm during this game to cover his scars. “If you look closely, you can see signs of self-harm on my right arm. (…) I had suicidal thoughts, I no longer wanted to get up and find myself playing alone in front of millions” of people, he had already confided on his Instagram account in February 2022 about his psychological health three years earlier.

“I ended up in a psychiatric ward in London”

Known for his showmanship, with sometimes very limited behavior on the court, Kyrgios had a year 2019 with an elimination in the first round of the Australian Open at home. Disqualified during the Rome tournament for having thrown a chair on the court in rage, he then withdrew at the last moment for Roland-Garros on the pretext of illness.

“I drank alcohol, I took drugs, I distanced myself from my family and my loved ones”, he admits in Break Point still according to The Australian. The click comes at the end of the 2019 edition of Wimbledon. “I lost and when I woke up my father was crying, sitting on my bed. I said to myself: Ok, I can’t go on like this. I ended up in a psychiatric ward in London to sort out my problems. »

Three years later, Kyrgios got back in the right direction by symbolically reaching the final at the same Wimbledon tournament last year. A final lost in four sets against Novak Djokovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (7/3). Since falling to 25th in the world due to a knee injury, he returned to competition this week in Stuttgart. Short of form, he was beaten by China’s Yibing Wu (64th) 7-5, 6-3 in just over an hour.
