Adif puts out to tender the Puerta de Atocha through station to connect the high-speed network in Spain

The underground station will have four new tracks and two platforms and will be located under the current high-speed station and Méndez Álvaro street. The infrastructure will connect the high-speed tunnel between Puerta de Atocha-Almudena Grandes and Chamartn-Clara Campoamor through the new high-speed southern access to the capital -in service since July last year- and allow high-speed trains to carry stop at both stations, thus completing the total connection of the northern half and the southern half of the high-speed network in Spain.

The infrastructure -of great technical complexity, although it will be developed while maintaining the railway circulation- will run from north to south along Méndez Álvaro street, taking advantage of the unevenness to generate various heights in which to develop different spaces; connecting both with Puerta de Atocha in the north and with a new hall in Méndez Álvaro at the southern end. In addition, the northern part of Puerta de Atocha will be remodeled, expanding and improving the spaces and integrating it with the accesses to the underground station.

central opening

The new station, framed in Phase 2 of the new Atocha railway complex, will be integrated into the rest of the high-speed facilities -using the same lobbies, control filters, etc.- to achieve maximum use and avoid duplication of spaces and equipment.

The new underground station will have a large central opening, which will allow light to enter through a skylight and a large curtain wall on the Méndez Álvaro façade. In addition, it will facilitate the visual communication of the underground space with the upper elements.

The through station will be divided into several levels: the platforms; two boarding rooms (north and south) and a system of communication walkways with the platforms; entrance/exit hall from Méndez Álvaro, with a taxi bag and all the associated intermodality elements, at the southern end of the station; spaces for railway services and the Hall of Authorities, in the extreme north; access for departing travelers entering from the commercial corridor; and the connection to the current first floor of the Puerta de Atocha departures hall from the north, as well as access to the extension of the arrivals walkway in the central area.

new lobby

The new Méndez Álvaro mixed concourse will incorporate the west side of the station, which will have a new façade, to high-speed services. The greater dynamism of this area will foster a better road balance and contribute to the reduction of road traffic on Avenida Ciudad de Barcelona, as well as on Paseo Infanta Isabel and Paseo Reina Cristina and Calle Alfonso XII.

The lobby will serve the passengers of the through station -both arrivals and departures- through three mechanical ramps, a manual staircase and four elevators. It will also serve travelers arriving from Puerta de Atocha, since it will connect with escalators to the current arrivals walkway.

In the central area of the lobby, the security control and the departure of arrivals passengers will be installed, thus distributing the lobby into two differentiated areas. On the façade of the southern area, there will be several accesses to communicate with the outside, where a large intermodality platform (taxis, VTC and Kiss&ride).
