Rapporteur at the Senate CCJ says that Zanin’s nomination to the STF should pass ‘without surprises’

Senator Veneziano Vital do Rêgo (MDB-PB), responsible for reporting on the nomination of Cristiano Zanin for the position of Minister of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), gave an opinion this Wednesday (14) on the admissibility of the appointment of the lawyer .

The document was forwarded to the CCJ (Commission on Constitution and Justice) of the Senate. The body’s collegiate is responsible for questioning Zanin. The hearing is scheduled for next Wednesday (21).

The lawyer was appointed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to fill the vacancy left by Ricardo Lewandowski, who retired from the Supreme Court in April.

Veneziano’s opinion presents Zanin’s professional trajectory pointing to his “academic genesis at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP)”. The parliamentarian also declared that the document followed a “technical” work.

“Therefore, the versatility and scope in the various branches of law is evident, which allowed the nominee to enjoy professional recognition both among his lawyer peers, as well as among members of the Judiciary and the Public Prosecutor’s Office”, says the parliamentarian in the report.

“We understand that the senators who are members of the Federal Senate’s Constitution, Justice and Citizenship Commission have sufficient and abundant elements to sign a convincing judgment on the appointment of Dr. Cristiano Zanin Martins, to exercise the august position of Minister of Federal Supreme Court”, he adds.

To become a minister of the Federal Supreme Court, Zanin needs to be approved by the CCJ, which has 27 full members. He needs to get 14 favorable votes from the senators who participate in the collegiate.

Then your nomination will be evaluated by all senators. If he receives 41 favorable votes, the lawyer will be able to occupy the seat of the STF.

Who is Zanin?

Lawyer graduated from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), Cristiano Zanin Martins gained notoriety for having participated in the defense of Lula during Operation Lava Jato.

Zanin’s second work, ‘Lawfare: an Introduction’, was published with the same co-authors in 2019 and later translated into English and Spanish.
