Growth is hesitating and employment is slowing. Even though the resistance of the labor market continues to defy forecasts, INSEE has played it safe in establishing its own at the end of 2023: with GDP expected to rise modestly by 0.6% this year, the French economy will not will be enriched “only” by 175,000 jobs, salaried or not, against 445,000 last year. Construction will even lose 32,000!

“The business tendency surveys quite clearly point to a concomitant slowdown in economic activity and selling prices, particularly in the manufacturing industry”, underlined the head of the business cycle department of the national statistical institute, Julien Pouget, during of a press conference. The evolution of employment will therefore follow the trend, especially since the pace of learning – which explains a third of jobs created since the end of Covid – will also slow down.
