Mental health is a pending issue and one in which very few governments in the world pay attention. As a consequence, most only focus on the physical part but leave aside the well-being of people. The same scenario is repeated within organizations because the Most workers suffer from problems such as stress, depression and anxiety.

Global overview of men’s health

On the occasion of the International Men’s Health Weekwhich this year takes place from June 12 to 18, the startup Tell me made a call to implement actions to improve their psychological well-being, including men, who approach the platform to attend to conditions such as stress, depression and anxiety, which affect eight out of 10 workers.

According to the data collected in the therapies provided from 2019 to date, 43.5% have been taken by men; of which 47.7% were treated for anxiety, 18.7% for depression and 11.6% for stress, among others.

In general, 42.7% of the employees of companies that access the mental health platform are men. Although the percentage does not vary much compared to women, it is still a reality that there are still cultural and generational barriers for men to accept that they suffer from a psychological condition and the impact is only seen until something happens, says the startup.

Suicides are more common in men than in women

In Mexico, there are 10.4 deaths by suicide per year for every 100,000 men, as opposed to 2.2 cases for every 100,000 women, according to the Inegi. Precisely among the risk factors are, according to data from the National Program for the Prevention of Suicide (PRONAPS)some problems related to mental health, such as: depression, anxiety and psychiatric disorders, in addition to the consumption of psychoactive substances, low socioeconomic level, loss of employment, social tension, problems in the family, in social relations and in the systems of support.

Given this panorama, the co-founder of Cuéntame, Fernando Chávez, highlighted the need to carry out actions, based on prevention, to improve the well-being and quality of life of employees in companies.

In fact, for every dollar invested in treatment for depression and anxiety returns up to 400%that is, it has an impact of 4 dollars on the improvement of health and work capacity, highlights the WHO.

Fernando Chávez also highlighted that the men of the younger generations are the most concerned about addressing their psychological conditions. Men between the ages of 26 and 35 (millennials) are the ones who access the platform the most (52.7%), while those who take the most therapies are between the ages of 26 and 40.

It should be noted that, based on the measures promoted through the platform, it has been possible to reduce anxiety symptoms among working men by 35%, depression has decreased by 47%, grief by 44% and stress by 23%. %.

Likewise, the content most sought after by men is related to stress management and the search for balance, and a growing interest in developing the habit of meditating, specifically in the morning.

For her part, the CEO and co-founder of the startup, Regina Athié, commented that the actions are focused on a “win-win” between companies and employees, since with them “it seeks to reduce the impact caused by conditions such as anxiety , depression and stress, increase engagement in the workplace and foster a culture of well-being that inspires and motivates people by caring for themselves and their families.”

He explained that for 70% of the users of the platform it is the first time they have accessed a mental health solution, that is, without the actions implemented by Cuéntame they would not have had access to attend to their psychological disorders.
