FAircraft noise, safety and, above all, cheap tickets – these were the main topics when aviation was discussed publicly for many years. But in 2019, within a few months, “flight shame” suddenly became a literal buzzword, a buzzword invented in Sweden. Since then, the focus of the discourse has changed radically – the question of how sustainable, how “green” this type of air transport is, is now in the foreground. Hardly a day goes by without an airline announcing new, noble projects to supposedly make flying more climate-friendly or even climate-neutral, driven by strict climate targets from the EU, for example.

Even during the pandemic, when at times even industry icons like the Lufthansa had to fear for survival, the topic always remained at the top of the agenda. “Sustainable”, “CO₂-neutral” or “responsible” are the most frequently mentioned terms in this new competition. An industry portal aptly wrote: “‘Sustainable’ is the new ‘cheap’ in airline marketing.”
