The mayor (Horizons) of the fifth largest city in France indicated on Thursday evening that he had been alerted by a letter from the academic inspector himself of these “extremely serious facts”. This Friday, the rector told the press that they concerned “three schools” and children aged 8 and 9. “The directors were informed by the canteen staff because it took place during the lunch break” between the end of May and the beginning of June, specified Natacha Chicot. Prayers were organized “by a dozen pupils” in the first establishment, by three of them in the second and, in the third, only one child was “at the initiative of a minute of silence in effect organized in homage to the prophet, ”she explained.

She mentions “intolerable” but “isolated” facts and which “did not take place on the same day”, she also argued, specifying that “for one of the cases, a report for radicalization was sent to the prefecture”. “In all these cases, there was a reminder to the families and we also reminded the students of the values ​​of secularism”, also indicated the rector, according to whom a high school was also concerned.

Christian Estrosi, for his part, explained in a press release that he “asked the prefect to organize a meeting as soon as possible with all the services concerned in order to put in place an action plan to put an end to this drift”.

“Our response must be firm, collective and resolute,” he said. The secular Republic that we defend and in which we believe is our collective bulwark against the religious obscurantism that tries to destabilize us. »

“Let the mayors be informed” of the returns “from Syria”

Christian Estrosi wrote to the Prime Minister to that effect. In particular, he asked him “that the mayors be henceforth informed of the establishments where the children whose families have returned from Syria are educated”, specifies the community. He also calls for a “major campaign to raise awareness of the phenomenon of radicalization to be launched in schools to better protect children and train our staff, as is already the case in Nice”.

“These facts contribute to the increase in attacks on secularism”, also reacted on Twitter the deputy of the Alpes-Maritimes and president of the Republicans Éric Ciotti. The parliamentarian calls on “the State to intervene urgently”.
