Vini Jr.: symbol against racism
On May 21, Vini Jr., was the target of racist attacks for the tenth time in the Spanish Championship, organized by LaLiga. The insults were hurled by fans in Real Madrid’s 2-1 away defeat to Valencia.
The recurring attacks on Vini Jr. triggered manifestations of support for the player all over the world and crossed the football barrier, becoming a political debate between Brazil and Spain.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva expressed solidarity with the player and demanded that sports authorities take serious measures to combat racial discrimination in football.
The Brazilian government issued a joint note from five ministries in repudiation of racism against Brazilians in Spain. The Ministries of Sport, Racial Equality, Foreign Affairs, Justice and Public Security and Human Rights and Citizenship signed the text.
Among numerous initiatives, earlier this week, the CBF and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) launched the “One skin” campaign against racism.
In Saturday’s friendly, for the first time in 109 years of history, the Brazilian men’s soccer team will enter the field with a completely black uniform, in yet another action organized by the entity to combat racism.
On Saturday, singer Anitta wore a shirt in honor of Vini Jr. during his appearance in the Champions League final.
This Thursday, Vini Jr. granted a press conference, in which he thanked all the support he has received.
“I want to follow [em frente] for all the young people who suffer and don’t have the voice I have. One day I gave an interview saying that I wanted all Brazilians to cheer for me, and I think I’m getting closer and closer to that”, declared the striker.
“I see everyone on the internet giving me a lot of support, accompanying me, wishing me luck, not only in football, but also outside of it. I will once again stand firm for those who have no opportunity to fight,” he said.
