Promoted by the European Marine Boardin collaboration with the Centro Tecnolóxico do Mar-Fundación Cetmar, the CSIC, the Centro de Investigación Mariña of the University of Vigo, the Campus do Mar, the European Commission and the main marine research networks in Europe, will be held on the 10th and October 11th It will be a space for exchange and debate on the latest advances and future challenges in marine research and the sustainable use of the ocean.

The conference will seek key messages for the international scientific community on the need to restore and safeguarding for future generations the good state of the ocean and the sustainability of the services provided by marine ecosystems by promoting research and relevant knowledge for this purpose.

As reported by Mar, the EuroOCEAN Conference is the main “meeting forum at European level on politics and marine science”. It offers a unique opportunity for the research community and all stakeholders to engage with those responsible for marine policies and strategies in EU Member States to consider, discuss and respond to new developments, challenges and opportunities in marine science and technology. .

The one in October in Vigo will be the tenth edition of the event and is part of the agenda of the Spanish Presidency of the EU to seek to reinforce synergies between the mission of the European Union for the restoration of the ocean and continental waters until 2030, the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and other international and European research and innovation initiatives. Previous editions of EurOCEAN have been held in Brussels (1993), Sorrento (1995), Lisbon (1998), Hamburg (2000), Galway (2004), Aberdeen (2007), Ostend (2010), Rome (2014) and Paris ( 2019).

The conference will underline the importance of joining efforts for collective action and in favor of marine science to ensure the fulfillment of the UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 and the EU mission to Restore the Ocean and the Ridges in the horizon of 2030. Everything, explains Mar, “through a wide program that will soon be announced on the EurOcean 2023 website, where it is already possible to register as a participant”.

Linked to EuroOCEAN there will be other events two days before the meeting. Also at the initiative of the European Marine Board (EMB), through its program of young ambassadors, on October 8 and 9, in the Cidade da Cultura of Santiago, a work forum will be held to Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOP), which will bring together 70 representatives of these young professionals, two for each of the organizations associated with the EMB.

This group will transfer its conclusions to the subsequent conference and will thus become a space for training and intergenerational dialogue between the ECOPs of the EMB« and the leaders of European politics, experts and members of the scientific community at the highest level.»

To close the week, on October 12 and 13, the members of the European Marine Board will meet at the Cetmar headquarters.
