The most emblematic railway project in the country in recent decades, the North-South Railway will inaugurate its central and southern sections this Friday (16), putting into operation a route operated by Rumo of 1,537 kilometers of track between Estrela D’Oeste (inland SP) and Porto Nacional (Tocantins), which passes through four of the five regions of the country.

Norte-Sul is a train whose history stretches back to the 1980s and has now finally been completed.

The governments followed one another without being able to complete the work, which in 2017 had already consumed R$ 33 billion in inflation-corrected values, until in 2019 Rumo won a public tender whose offer was R$ 2.7 billion. The concession is valid for 30 years.

The North-South is essential for the country’s railway development, as it is considered an axis of the system, since it passes through the Center-West, North, Southeast and Northeast regions and allows the connection between the ports of Itaqui (Maranhão) and Santos, through routes operated by three concessionaires (Rumo, VLI and Vale).
