Unilab signs Ceará without Hunger Pact

The 16th of June began with the celebration of a forceful gesture by countless leaders from Ceará and Brazil: Governor Elmano de Freitas, the president of the intersectoral Governance Committee of the Ceará Sem Fome Program Lia de Freitas, the President of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Ceará Evandro Leitão, the Minister of State for Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger Wellington Dias signed the Pact for a Ceará without hunger.

The University of International Integration of Afro-Brazilian Lusofonia was one of the represented Public Institutions that signed the Pact, in the person of the Magnificent Vice-Rector Cláudia Ramos Carioca, at this remarkable moment in the history of the Country. The State University of Ceará, in the person of the Magnificent Rector Hildebrando Soares, as well as the Vice-Rector of the State University of Vale do Acaraú Francisco Carvalho Arruda made the same gesture as Unilab, in a ceremony that also brought together Social Movements, Trade Unions, society Organized civil society and various agents of the political class.

The gathering of so many political powers, civil society organizations, the private sector, class entities and social and cultural movements, as well as other segments aware of the situation of hunger that affects part of the Brazilian people, has the objective of strengthening public policies dedicated to this priority objective.

According to the Vice-Rector of the University of International Integration of Afro-Brazilian Lusofonia, “The pact signed by Unilab together with all the authorities present is the consolidation of the commitment of this Superior Management with what is most important and valuable for life”.

However, the eradication of hunger does not only require speedy government actions. It is also a priority, with regard to this issue, to develop, according to Minister Wellington Dias, an integrated action of “transfer of dignity”, to repeat the feat of 2014, when the eradication of hunger in the country was declared.

The Ceará Without Hunger Program

Aiming to reach families that are directly affected by food insecurity, the first steps of the Program are aimed at distributing Ceará sem Fome cards, so that beneficiaries purchase food produced preferably by family farming and also in small local businesses. In addition, the objective is to create a Network of Social Units Producers of Meals in the capital and in the interior of the State. In all, with the actions of the Federal Government, there are approximately 32 integrated social programs to safeguard food and nutrition.
