A red button with the abbreviation SOS is drawing attention in the interior of several car models. It is no longer a privilege of luxury vehicles and is being increasingly implemented in popular categories, such as Chevrolet’s Onix.

The question that remains in the air, however, is: What happens when you press this button? Most people still don’t know what it’s for, nor how the device works. But we’ll help you find out, in the lines below.

In Brazil, the first automaker to implement it was Volvo. Today, the red SOS button is already used by several brands. And I’m already advancing that it doesn’t take a serious accident to happen to figure out how to use it. Even in this type of situation, the car itself makes an automatic emergency call.

How does the button work?

The location of the button, as well as the services it offers, varies by vehicle model, but generally speaking, it works in a similar way. Basically, when you press it, the car’s communication system contacts a call center.

Once this is done, the attendant usually analyzes the issue reported by the user and, based on that, he triggers the recommended service, such as the police, ambulance, firefighter or even the mechanic.

Examples

With BMW Connected Drive, BMW Teleservice is offered. The moment a person clicks on iDrive Controller, technicians offer professional phone support.

Adventure Intelligence, by Jeep, also offers functions by application, as soon as the user presses the SOS button. Through it, it is possible, for example, to consult the fuel level and receive notifications about theft.

In Onix, just touch the red button, located in the car’s rear view mirror, for the OnStar service team to connect you to the local emergency service, in addition to helping you with information about the location of the car.

Using the service, however, is not free. It requires the payment of a fee, the amount of which varies according to the type of assistance contracted.
