French President Emmanuel Macron said he intends to actively promote the development of the artificial intelligence (AI) industry in France. He spoke about this in an interview with the TV channel CNBC. “We will invest like crazy in research and education,” the French president said, adding that the French government will allocate €500 million to support projects related to artificial intelligence in order to create new leaders in this market.

Last week, France hosted the largest technology exhibition in the country, Viva Tech, where one of the main topics was AI. Not only French start-ups, but also leading technology companies, as well as companies from other industries, such as banking, presented their developments and development plans in this area.

“Obviously the US is now number one in this industry. One of the main reasons is the huge domestic market. Therefore, I want to close this gap – to invest, develop and accelerate as much and as quickly as possible,” the French president said. “France has a good chance of becoming a leader (in AI) in Europe. But it has to compete with countries like Germany and the UK,” Anton Dabura, co-director of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Self-reliant Research, told CNBC.
