This week, Narva Castle, known for its cinematography, once again became a film set. Within the framework of the Narva Projects on the Way to Capitalization/Narva Projects CAP project, the process of creating the situational comedy “Borders of the Key” has started here, the action of which takes place in the medieval semi-fairytale reality of the city of Narva.

In the cinematic universe of the series, Narva is an ordinary medieval city located on the very border, between two worlds – Western and Eastern civilizations. Hence the name “Border Key” – Narva is a castle town on the border, it is also a castle that locks it.

This Narva is inhabited by people of typical medieval professions: knight, executioner, minstrel, inquisitor, smuggler, beautiful lady, as well as characters with professions more appropriate in the 21st century. The phenomena familiar to you and me, such as barbershops, beauty salons, buying real estate through a broker, have been transferred to the harsh everyday life of ancient times.

Unfortunately, there are not very many chronicles dating back to the Middle Ages that could reliably tell us about the life of ordinary residents of the city in that period. This opens up the opportunity for the authors to fantasize about everyday topics, and the comedy genre gives the project marketing and media relevance.

A feature of the series is also the fact that local residents and actors from Narva are involved in its production. Filming takes place in Hermann’s Castle, on the territory of the fortress, as well as in other iconic places: the city promenade, the town hall square and the bastions.

After being tested by the pandemic and subsequent crises, the Narva Museum faced the difficult task of developing new forms of communication to engage the public, and the idea of filming a mini-series, from the creator of documentaries and entertainment programs, Artur Tyulenev, cinematographer Yuri Zhiltsov and the WedTime Pro team, turned out to be the most interesting, and a rich collection of historical costumes and textured interiors of the museum became the basis for further creative process.

Filming of the series will take place in June, and in the autumn the viewer will be able to evaluate the result of creative work. The series will be available on the Youtube platform in Estonian, Russian, English and Finnish (subtitles).

The implementation of the project became possible thanks to the cooperation of the Department of Development and Economics of the City of Narva and the Narva Museum Foundation.
The project is being created with the financial support of the Estonian EU external border program 2014-2020. The same program supported the renovation of the Narva promenade and the western courtyard of Hermann’s castle. The project is being implemented under the European Neighborhood Instrument and co-financed by the European Union.

The project budget is 77,000 euros, self-financing of partners 7,700 euros, program support 69,300 euros. The project is being implemented from May 1 to October 31, 2023.
