On the morning of June 19, the first hearing of a new trial opened against the Russian opponent Alexeï Navalny, already detained since the beginning of 2021 and sentenced to nine years in prison for fraud in March 2022. It is within the penal colony where he is serving his sentence, in the Vladimir region, 250 kilometers east of Moscow, that he was again brought before a judge, this time on charges of“extremism”.

As relayed by the Russian opposition site in exile Medusa, He is charged with the following charges: “constitution of an extremist association”, “calls for extremism”, “creation of a non-governmental organization attacking the rights of citizens”, “financing of extremism”, “involvement of minors in dangerous actions” and finally “Rehabilitation of Nazism”.

This last accusation is undoubtedly linked to the assertion of its support for Ukraine, which the Kremlin accuses of rehabilitating Nazi ideology.

The former main opponent of Vladimir Putin’s regime could face up to thirty years in prison, still according to Medusa. His supporters denounce the attempts of the Russian authorities to “break Navalny in prison”, “in order to force him to stop his criticism of the Russian president”, reports the British agency Reuters.

The former technical director of the YouTube channel “Navalny Live”, Daniel Kholodny, is tried at the same time as him. Journalists were not allowed to enter the courtroom.
